Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a powerful tool for sports medicine. Strong magnetic impulses are used to scan the body. There is no radiation used in this test and is, therefore, the favoured scan when the ability to diagnose a problem is similar to nuclear medicine or CT scanning.
MRI has revolutionised our ability to 'see' inside joints and tissues. It seems to be far superior to CT scanning for visualising soft tissues such as ligaments, muscles and tendons. It is less sensitive than CT scanning for assessing some bone problems, but can pick up stress fractures, etc. It is a very useful tool in our armamentarium for assessing sports injuries.
It is our belief that correct treatment requires an accurate diagnosis. The commencement of treatment to an injury without knowing the diagnosis goes against our ideals.
To enable the best form of treatment available, we utilise the services of a wide variety of like-minded health professionals with a special interest in sports medicine.
It is vitally important that you are actively involved in the decision making about your own care.
We are very keen to avoid doing anything to people that would cause harm. Whilst some treatments will have inherent risks, there are other treatments where the risk is unacceptable and will not be offered.
